The World will not be destroyed by those that do evil; but by those who watch them without doing anything
– Albert Einstein
The morning started bad for Juliana. She had been dealing with a horrible tooth ache for 3 days. Without any free time at the sanctuary to go to the dentist, she chose this day to finally go, however, before leaving she checked her Facebook page and she saw a post about dog that had been hit by a car. The dog was lying on the side of the road, helpless and in pain. The post got 112 reactions, 199 shares and more than 230 comments from people saying, “help somebody help,” “can somebody help,” “please, someone go to help her,” “God with help.” But in reality, nobody was that “someone” helping.
Juliana called the veterinary of the sanctuary, Sebastian and they broth drove as as fast as they could can to help this dog, who was more than two hours away from the sanctuary.
Once there, the guy who took the photo was around and a local woman who donated $20 for her medical care. Juliana and Sebastian took the dog to a special vet center about 40 minutes away. The dog was in extreme pain so they had to drive slow. Once there, she received emergency care.
With a broken leg, a broken hip, pain in the lungs, and a lot of fear she was finally in a place where she can be fully cared for. Later that evening, they fixed her broken leg but we will have to wait a month before they can repair her hip. It is going to be a long recovery, around 3 months, but we are ready to give her all that she needed.
Juliana is sad to find that most people in her country, Colombia, are not ready to help injured animals but only ask others to help.
About 2 weeks ago, Juliana’s computer stopped working. This meant she could not work on her translation jobs and as a result, she lost the contracts. The day she went to rescue the dog she was with a terrible tooth pain that had not slept properly the night before. She was breastfeeding her human son and left everything to run and help this dog in urgent need. Juliana is always wondering why if she has so much work, caring for than 80 animals, and a baby to tend to, and is still able to help in emergencies, why others can’t? She feels she is just a common human like everyone, so what is the difference? Why do so many humans ignore others pain? It is a big world but essentially we all family (earthlings), and as a family, we have to share and care for each other. Everyone can do what Juliana did. It is not too difficult. Even with the extreme pain she was experiencing, she did it. So we know anyone could do the same, but alas, they don’t.
There are many ways to help others in need and we can all play a part in changing the world for the better. We need more actions and not just words.
